New York City trip ——- Amaru

On Thursday, June 18th, 2009, the 5th grade will go to New York City.  The only bad part of the trip is that we have to be at school at 4:15 am.  I am going to bring an electronic game and a book.  The reason that I am bringing a book is because I told my parents if I bring my electronic game, I have to bring a book.

Books —– Ben

DSC09048In conflict management we had to write books with conflicts.  We got to take the books home.  My book is called The Fight. It’s about a bull and a rat that end up fighting because a dog says to the  bull,  the rat called you fat and so on.

Guest Speaker ——- Nora

Ed Baptist is an historian.  In case you haven’t figured it out already, that means that he studies history.  He came to our class with a laptop and quite a few packets of paper stapled together.  His purpose was to talk to us about slave immigration.  We have been learning about Ellis Island immigrants, but not slave immigrants.

Ed was prepared with a slide show full of drawings depicting a variety of things, such as, slaves doing their work, or a cotton gin.

We were given the packets which were  bunch of copies of old documents and slave information.  The people who wrote the stuff had very bad handwriting.  So the papers were very hard to decipher.

Ratios in Math! ——- Cameron

In math, we are learning about ratios.  Ratio are when you compare something to something else.  For example, if 4 out of 7 people like vanilla ice cream, then the ration of the people who like vanilla ice cream to all of the people would be four to seven, or 4:7.  Ratios can beome very useful in life, particularly if you are conducting a survey.  I like to use ratios because they are fun.

In Art we’re drawing “3D” rooms.  I’m not finish jet, but I will be next art class.  Next art class is our last art class.  I’m making my “3D” room for Stacey.  Some kids are still on their tunnel books.

Drumming ——- Kayla

Every Thursday and Friday morning, Ms. Ehly teaches us drumming.  We performed for our talent show and for every assembly, we perform at the end as classes leave.  We will also get to perform for our “Moving Up” ceremony A.K.A graduation.  It is exciting to be a drummer, because every one is looking at you and you have to try not to mess up.  I’m going to miss drumming when I leave Belle Sherman.  My favorite song is “Koko” becaue my step dancing group gets to step to it – which is REALLY REALLY fun.  For “Moving Up” we ar going to play “Funga” and whoever wants to sing (5th graders) will sing while we play. I can’t wait.

Music ——- Kieren

In music we have been practicing our graduation song.  The songs are “I Wander” and “Adventure.”  “I Wonder” is a slow smooth song.  “Adventure” is a faster song.  I like both the osngs, but I think “I Wonder” is my favorite.

We have also been singing songs we like from the books and playing the recorder again.

I really  enjoy music and I think Ms. Nelson is a great music teacher!!

C M Stories ——- Sarah

DSC09046In conflict management as you know, we have written books about conflicts.  We had an assembly to tell the 2nd – 4th graders that we had hoped that they would keep Belle Sherman a kind and respectful place after we go to middle shcool.  I wrote a book about a family of horses – two sisters, a mom and a dad.  The sisters were fighting over a carrot and solved the problem respectfully.  There, that is all, thank you for reading the blog.

P.E. ——-Eleanor

In PE we can pretty much do whatever we want.  Well, as long as. we stay on the playground and don’t do anything crazy or dangerous.  We get to go outside, and play basketball, kickball, or just play on the structure.  Today, my friends and I played on the swings and watched Kieren Nora, Maggie and a few other people play kickball.  We aren’t starting a new unit beause it is the end of the year, and there aren’t really enough days left at school to get into  some kind of sport.  I like going outside for PE because it’s like having a second recess.  Today it was kind of cold and wet outside, so it wasn’t as fun as it usually is.

Immigration Poem — Johnny

In immigration one of the assignments was to read Emma Lazarus’s poem and reflect what Americans thought about immigrants long ago and today.  We had to memorize 5 lines of the poem and say them out loud.  We had to make a picture about the poem and I did a torch.
